Yesterday, I finally submitted assignment three on folk influence on nineteenth-century music. It took me a lot longer that I thought and having finished the research about three weeks ago I have not had time to complete writing the essay until the last few days.
The assignment was a little different from the original plan as I found more interesting pieces of music to look at as I did background research on the three composers.
I chose Grieg’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies and the final movement from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4. I think in terms of the modern concert repertoire these work quite well in being a chamber work, a solo piano work and a symphonic work, which give a broad spectrum of genres, except for vocal music. It would have been good to cover an opera as well, but I think time to research this and fit it into a 1200 word essay would have been too much.
